Submarine cables and Fortaleza
Fortaleza is Brazil’s main landing point for submarine internet cables, with links to the United States, Europe and Africa. Praia do Futuro has 17 connection points, 16 of them in operation, and V.tal’s Synapse cable will be the 18th.
Why Fortaleza
The capital of Ceará sits on the northern tip of the Brazilian coast, in a favorable position for routes toward North America, Europe and Africa. Cables come ashore on city beaches and connect to stations that distribute traffic to the rest of the country.
What is changing
Cables are designed to last about 25 years, and several systems between Brazil and the United States started operating in 2000 and 2001, according to O Povo (October 3, 2026). Data demand is expected to grow, and that expectation does not yet fully account for data centers. The federal government cited the cable network anchored in Fortaleza as one of three pillars of the Ceará data center model (O Povo, October 14, 2026).
What the equation still does not show
Geographic position attracts infrastructure, but local jobs and companies depend on technical training and purchasing in the region. That chapter is still open.
The view from next door. The infrastructure that carries the country's internet comes ashore on a Fortaleza beach, yet barely shows in the life of the city. For those living there, the challenge is turning a privileged position into technical training, local companies and opportunity.
