Investment attraction: how it works
Investment attraction is the work of a government, agency or consultancy to make a company choose a territory to set up or expand an operation. It runs from market intelligence to follow-up after installation.
The five stages
- Intelligence. Map sectors and companies that make sense for the territory.
- First contact. Present the value proposition of the region.
- Visit and negotiation. Location, infrastructure, labor and incentives.
- Installation. Licenses, construction and hiring.
- Aftercare. Follow the company afterwards, solve obstacles and support expansion.
What decides the choice
In general: cost and availability of energy, logistics, skilled people, legal certainty, predictability, incentives and the relationship with the surroundings.
A common mistake
Treating installation as the finish line. For the territory, it is the starting line.
The view from next door. The investor chooses the territory, and the territory lives with the choice for decades. Attracting well means attracting projects that the community recognizes as its own.
