Green hydrogen at Pecém
Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced with renewable electricity. The Pecém Green Hydrogen Hub, in Ceará, is one of the most ambitious projects in the sector in Brazil and is still in the structuring and funding stage.
What it is
Green hydrogen is obtained when electricity from renewable sources, such as wind and sun, splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. It can serve the fertilizer industry, steel and shipping fuels.
Why Pecém
The complex combines a port, an export zone and access to wind and solar power. The Pecém Complex H2V Hub was approved as a case study in the Finance for Just and Green Energy Transition fund, linked to the United Nations, according to O Povo (October 2, 2026). The report does not give amounts or a funding timeline.
What has moved forward
In October 2024, Brazil’s federal government approved Australian company Fortescue’s R$ 17.5 billion project in the Pecém ZPE, with operations planned for August 2028. Outside Ceará, White Martins opened in April 2026, in Jacareí (São Paulo), what it called Brazil’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen plant, producing 800 tonnes a year.
The view from next door. Green hydrogen needs a lot of energy, water and land. People living near Pecém want to know where the water will come from, how many local jobs will appear and who benefits from the energy generated.
